Interesting watching people just getting into Ghost in the Shell going, "Hey wait, this writing's kinda fash" Like, yeah, Masamune Shirow is a bit of a nationalist and his works are always about cops beating the shit out of people to protect the state. GitS is set in a future specifically constructed to make Japan into a superpower (they're the only nation with a counter for nuclear weapons) and Motoko opens the first episode of the first season of Stand Alone Complex by telling a refugee terrorist to sit down and shut up if he doesn't like how the world works now. There's a reason I wasn't particularly excited about a series being more faithful to his vision. His vision can be pretty fash.
