"Marriage is just a piece of paper!" NO IT'S NOT. It gives you legal rights and benefits as a couple that unmarried couples aren't entitled to. Sure, don't get married if you don't want to, but you can't then complain when you're not treated like a legally married couple.

@anon_opin@mastodon.social In particular, in the UK, when you die, no #InheritanceTax is payable on anything you leave to your spouse or civil partner: https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax If you never formalised the relationship, no matter how long it lasted, the surviving partner may have to sell the house to pay the #IHT. This is not financial advice, obviously. Go and get some from someone qualified to give it.
