News today had me seething. Last weekend I called my mom, who told me she prefers to just ignore all the bad news that's going on. That also had me seething. Today I wrote a to-the-point email to her, explaining the reality of life for LGBTQ+ Americans. I linked to news sources specifically about the campaign against trans people, and also to the Wikipedia article about the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft. Up until now, I thought it too risky to bring up her GOP-voting family members and how I feel about them. She's admonished me before about judging them for their politics. Today that changed. The GOP has been campaigning openly on the eradication of queer people from public life since before I was born. What's happening now is not an accidental byproduct of their otherwise reasonable politics. It is the point of their politics. If this damages my relationship with my mom, then the relationship wasn't really built to withstand real strain anyway.
