#Monsterdon morning-after reflection: I appreciate how Sam Neill's character in In the Mouth of Madness (1994) is an insurance investigator instead of just being a cop like a billion other movies. The suspension of disbelief that would otherwise be required to buy that a cop is actually a hard-working skeptic mystery-solver can be fruitfully put towards, like, a horror novelist having the power to rewrite reality. Also, as any Frictional Games fan can attest, horror is much more fun when the protagonist doesn't automatically get any weapons and can only curl up and gibber in fear.
