Windows 11 built-in weather app eats more than 1.2 GB of memory just to tell you if it is going to rain or hot today. Hah. Linux and Unix users just type: curl wttr.in curl wttr.in/city_name_here curl wttr.in/nyc curl wttr.in/moon curl wttr.in/london https://www.windowslatest.com/2026/08/09/windows-11s-weather-app-uses-5x-the-ram-of-macos-weather-and-it-still-shows-ads/

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Since curl is available on windows as well, I think a fair comparison would be to check against desktop weather applications available on operating systems running linux. For instance, on my GNU Guix machine running GNOME, the default weather app just takes around 64MB of ram 😎. But then features like Suggestion for your day, Maps, 3D maps are not available in most of the weather apps on the other side. And frankly i like the Unix approach here ;)

  • @nixCraft@mastodon.social KDE has a weather widget - not sure how much memory it uses, but probably not a lot.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I'd love to find a way to know the air quality PM2.5 and PM10 in my city.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social We've reached the point where the weather forecast needs more resources than entire operating systems used to.
