@theblufnews@mastodon.social this is awful! These systems can be so easily abused - I never realized that watching sci fi movies and reading sci fi books as a kid would be such an accurate prediction of our future. I'm reminded of books like 1984, Animal Farm, A Brave New World ... I could go on.

The 1984 parallel isn't just the cameras. It's that the paperwork designed to limit them doesn't have to mean anything.

@AZAdvocacyHub@mastodon.social The IJ attorney in the piece makes this exact point — the audit tool only catches misuse after it's already happened. The deeper problem is that the data was collected on everyone, without cause, and just sits there accessible. The design is what enables it; the officers just acted on what was already possible.
