Wouldn't ssh/sshfs be a better option?
SMB seems so convoluted to me, although maybe that's just an opinion from the bad old days when it had to be reverse-engineered by Tridge.

@rl_dane@polymaths.social macOS doesn't (natively) support this. Sure, you can rsync the files - but for total, native backup "a la TimeMachine", you need SMB
