Most Americans are okay with atrocities, even ones they're directly responsible for, as long as they're happening to someone else. Bonus if it's indirect & double bonus if it's somewhere else. This is the main reason I'll never feel okay thinking of myself as an American, or feel any kind of pride for what it is often presumed to represent. It's okay to not feel guilt by association when you do everything you can to avoid compulsory participation, but I'll never understand tacit patriotism.
