  That came out and was controversial in the first year of Obama’s term. Republicans held it against him since Saddam Hussein was still fairly fresh news, and everyone else saw it as a sign that the US constituency might actually be lightening up and becoming tolerant. We believed it at the time, even as Mitch McConnell and the Republican campaign machine were quietly plotting to block his every move and assure he was only a one-term president. They were really sore that a black man dare run as president and win.
