The main issue I have with a lot of amateur writing isn't any of the typical pitfalls like Mary Sue or bad grammar, it's that so much of it is simply describing the TV episode you're imagining in your head, and that's just not the most efficient use of the medium.
The main and most devastating weapon of prose fiction is the voice. Which point of view is used, word choices and metaphor, what details the narrator remarks on, what digressions they go on etc. is what makes a novel, and that's the reason why some novels are really hard to adapt.
