@gettie@fedi.catto.garden Small instances have no other way to discover content. Also it makes hashtag following much easier and the search function is actually usable. Cloudflare has some nice features aside from the proxying which you can turn off like adding DNSsec protection to the domain and http/3 support, although these are mostly irrelevant to the #fediverse which uses http/1.1 in its majority.

@charlie2alpha@fedi.charlie2alpha.org well, the instance i run is small-ish too, and we don't care about content. we care about interacting with cool critters (and people, occasionally). i know cloudflare provides a few neat features, but i think most of them can be set up without dealing with a mitm service.
