@charlie2alpha@fedi.charlie2alpha.org well, the instance i run is small-ish too, and we don't care about content. we care about interacting with cool critters (and people, occasionally).
i know cloudflare provides a few neat features, but i think most of them can be set up without dealing with a mitm service.

I guess I care more about content as I don't have much time for interactions anymore, so I need to see something useful when I open my fedi client for a glance. As for Cloudflare, I just use their free plan and it's convenient for me, it makes my server appear to others with the same IP. I don't use a VPS, just my home server and that's subject to IP changes. Also it is very possible in the future I'll end up behind a cgnat connection and Cloudflare can bypass that problem easily.
