I just recalled the interesting tidbit that the idea of writing "(he/him)" and "(she/her)" was invented many thousands of years ago by the Sumerians, who often used written symbols you weren't meant to pronounce out loud to help you visually parse the structure of cuneiform, and this included he/she markers for personal names. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinative
