@ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu US direct deposits/debits are funny, because they are a complete hack on top of the archaic paper check system. A couple decades back, they updated the internals of the system to send around electronic images of the checks instead of the actual paper checks themselves, so purely electronic payments work by generating an image of a check with the appropriate information, which then gets injected into the system. Yes, it's really that hacky, or at least was last time I looked
