bright lights big city also reminds me that i was reading raymond carver around the same time. i remember reading cathedral thinking "wow! this is like reading hemingway. some editor just went in a chopped everything". the writing was very concise, sorta like cormac mccarthy. that being said, the titular story lives rent free in my mind for some reason and i have no idea why. its just such a compelling story for something so mundane. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_(short_story_collection)
