In Warhammer 40k lore, there is a lot of very advanced technology, but much of the knowledge how to build it or even properly maintain it has been lost. Tech-Priests "maintain" technology with religious rites and anti-corruption wards. They believe machine spirits live in all their technology, and are responsible for the inner workings and automation of a machine. Machine spirits are believed to be beast-like, capable of hatred and stubbornness, even personality. Prayers must be recited during repairs. Blessed machine oils soothe agitated machine spirits.
