@rl_dane@polymaths.social I often remember that, from childhood to adulthood in conservative US subcultures, the older people (always men) frequently said "power corrupts... And absolute power corrupts absolutely" while nodding sagely. I was in my 30s when I started to notice that they stopped saying that when discussing Republicans in government.
