Please consider that some computer touchers and users just want something that broadly works without too much hassle and uses something made by assholes, sometimes evil ones, not because they agree with the assholes, but as a compromise because the other option(s) would completely fuck up or complicate their daily usage and/or workflow, and folks like me just don't have the fucking energy for the tech holy wars (ie, wayland vs x11, not something like DHH being a straight up fascist) and trying to learn and use the most correct ™️ thing. For example, my main systems run with systemd not because I necessarily agree with the project's goals or the devs' opinions, but because it provides the least friction out of the options available with the way I want to use my system. Open source/libre die-hards who thumb their nose at anything and everything proprietary as well as the people who use such things (not necessarily voluntarily) frustrate me similarly. I wish I had the energy for all that, but I really don't. Edit: I may not be wording very good because I'm frustrated and hungry (hangry), but obviously you shouldn't be supporting projects and people that bring harm to others if you can reasonably help it. This post was mainly in frustration to those who scoff and make some snarky comment because you use wayland or kde or systemd or whatever, to give you some additional context.

@maddy@thegayagenda.fans This basically affects almost all people in my village. Almost everyone is a windows user here even if most of them could just be using a beginner friendly Linux distro because it would be sufficient (usually it's just web browsing and sometimes office here)

@maddy@thegayagenda.fans This is an extremely good point, and I think it applies to society more broadly as well I don't use Steam because I am unaware that proprietary software and DRM are Evil (tm) -- I use it because there's basically no other way to play most of the games my partner enjoys without devoting 150% of my free time to getting them to work without Steam and violating a dozen laws in the process... but I do buy from Itch-io when I can to make sure devs get paid as much as possible and a better platform gets some support I don't buy things from Amazon because I am unaware that they are one of the driving forces of hypercapitalism and responsible for innumerable human rights abuses globally -- I use it because there's literally nowhere locally I can buy this obscure product... but I do shop locally whenever I can, and I don't pay for Amazon Prime I don't vote for establishment centrists because I'm unaware how spineless, morally bankrupt, and corrupt they are -- I just don't want the literal fascists to win... but I do vote for the most progressive choice possible in the primary elections As sick as we all are of choosing the lesser evil, it's still better than choosing the greater evil, and usually it's better than hurting ourselves by choosing nothing at all

@maddy@thegayagenda.fans And the whole #systemd literally happen in the last couple of months when the wood folk got all excited about inclusion of #vibecode I suspect even they, unless they build a new boxen are still running systemd because ideology and hypocrisy are two different things. And while one just takes a few angry #toots to avoid the other you have to rewire the innards of your existing systems.

@maddy@thegayagenda.fans i never use things, because i agree or disagree with the creator. most of the time i don't know them, and don't care. i use things that work for me.
