@stfn@mastodon.com.pl ok, this is at least coherent. You're off-grid with it, so that's surely an achievement and makes sense. Still triggers a few thoughts, like I'd assume using LTE would overall use more power (thinking LTE base station etc) than a comparable home-wired-connection setup. But this all depends on what you're goal is at the end of the day.

@tiefpunkt@social.tchncs.de I do not think there is an easy answer to your question. If you are looking for the lowest overall power consumption for hosting a website, I don't think you can go lower than with renting a VPS which is a 1/256 of a physical PC running in an extremely optimized data center? But if other factors come into play, then well, for example I like the offgrid nature of my setup. And if I were to host those servers in my house instead, they would use the grid electricity that is much dirter than pure solar. And anyway, one way or the other you will need to get into the internet, which are other computers that also use power, there is no escape from it. What I am saying is that I would not dismiss those projects as "just art", they have other meanings, like showing the power of DIY, or building a community, or inspiring that there are alternatives to "traditional" computing.
