@rootschange@kolektiva.social @scathach@stereophonic.space > Why is a smart phone app still required? Because some bad people want to use hardened by them Linux desktop and it would not be possible to read their messages by the lawful warrant (to search their phone) using Pegasus or similar hacking tools. If there is an app on the phone, and this phone sits without battery in the drawer, Linux desktop of a bad guy will get delinked. So bad guy will be pushed to turn this phone on. The moment the phone goes online for relink, all messages bad guy read on their Linux are pushed to the phone and there got decrypted, hence authorized law agencies can get to this communication by their usual means, because national security is of paramount importance to every subject who has nothing to hide. P.S. if all your contacts are nerds, you all can set-up a standalone desktop instances since 2016 or so. Just this way is out of reach for the general population.

@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @rootschange@kolektiva.social @scathach@stereophonic.space your summary is accurate i'd like to underline the fact that this status quo isn't signal's fault there is a generalized roundabout discussion i see that keeps happening: "why can't this app just do this? i'm so angry at the app" but the reason is the govt yet people don't get angry at the govt, they get angry at the app the app can't change the govt but the people can change the govt if they fucking vote, and direct their anger constructively
