your summary is accurate
i'd like to underline the fact that this status quo isn't signal's fault
there is a generalized roundabout discussion i see that keeps happening:
"why can't this app just do this? i'm so angry at the app"
but the reason is the govt
yet people don't get angry at the govt, they get angry at the app
the app can't change the govt
but the people can change the govt
if they fucking vote, and direct their anger constructively

@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @rootschange@kolektiva.social @scathach@stereophonic.space btw: it doesn't have to be the device is "hacked by pegasus" it's more like when the govt wants to know who said something they don't like, they will go and subpoena the records and if signal goes "we don't know" then signal gets targeted by the govt so signal either exists at the govt's graces, or it ceases to exist so signal has to do this again, the problem is the govt, not signal and people CONSTANTLY misdirect blame https://signal.org/bigbrother/
