it's more like when the govt wants to know who said something they don't like, they will go and subpoena the records
and if signal goes "we don't know" then signal gets targeted by the govt
so signal either exists at the govt's graces, or it ceases to exist
so signal has to do this
again, the problem is the govt, not signal
and people CONSTANTLY misdirect blame

And given that Signal is a foundation, why don't they operate from somewhere else? The real reason here is phone numbers cost money, so infinite spam is not free. That and their architecture is still phone number based. WhatsApp took over precisely because it could match your contacts. Signal does that without a centralized address book. Signal is the best thing that doesn't require tech support
