It was a small barrel on its side if you're wondering. They traditionally have a grill in bottom to prevent the mail sitting in any water. Or a sheet of asbestos.

    By far my biggest hot take on letterboxes is that all the best letterboxes used to be something else. With the exception of the ones made by your local Men's Shed (or probably scout group, CWA, whatever, idk, here it's just the Men's Shed). Those are also excellent. Public mailboxes from anywhere ever are obviously elite tier. But basically any sturdy barrel or dog kennel shaped recycled object at chest level is, in my week of experience, vastly more postie friendly than anything sold as a letterbox.
