Back in 2001 I worked on Sprint ION, which was the precursor to bundled networking. It relied heavily on ATM rather than IP. It was canceled in late 2001, and with it ATM was pretty much defunct for most purposes.
I kinda wonder what the Internet would look like if the ION service had caught on, and ATM networking became a backbone technology.
Which may seem arcane, but it would have influenced a lot of other technologies.
