@revk@toot.me.uk Suspect this was true for analogue stuff. For digital, I did work in the SS7 world for a while, but not quite sure how much would be logged. If someone is doing "nefarious" stuff to route calls in a strange way, its possible that there may not be enough logging to figure the whole route out after the fact? Especially since the call may be routed through multiple independent telcos - the callee's telco is probably not going to have full routing data back to the caller?

@revk@toot.me.uk the "more and more digits over time" is obviously nonsense in the digital age. For analogue stuff, the digits often gave you geographic info about the exchanges needed to route a call through. For SS7 the phone number is completely separate from the underlying network addressing (and I think there may be no technical requirement for a caller to even have a phone number? - phone numbers are used for finding a callee on the network, I don't think they are needed to route back to the caller)
