A friend with an iPhone attempted to send me a photo (MMS) to my android (grapheneOS) phone and got, from number 866:
"sorry, this service is not available"
And the image/text does not arrive.
Is this some extended iPhone service thingie? Web search turns up helpful suggestions from Apple Support "did you try power cycling your phone", and this gem: "To send a message as iMessage or MMS, you need a cellular data or Wi-Fi connection."
Weird.

@tomjennings@tldr.nettime.org I’d start with: in Messages on the iPhone, in the text stream with you, the entry field when empty should say “Text Message • MMS” (or SMS or RCS). Worth checking what it actually says.

@tomjennings@tldr.nettime.org MMS is a carrier controlled service so it’s controlled by their network and plan. MMS and RCS both depend on servers operated by the phone company so there’s a ton of room for weird delays or errors. I’ve even had errors like that after the recipient successfully received the message.
