One often repeated bad gardening advice I've seen on YouTube is telling newbies that you need amazing soil to grow crops like potatoes, turnips & yams. I'll tell you straight up, from a family with farming roots going back multiple generations, that none of those tubers/root vegetables need great soil. These are all poor people crops, that helped many folks, across the globe, to survive famine times. They will grow in extremely poor soil & require very little care after being planted. Some food plants do need high quality soil to grow enough to provide you with food harvests. The food plants I've mentioned above don't need high quality soil to thrive. Potatoes & turnips in particular tend to do better in what most folks consider poor soil & they don't do as well with super enriched soil.
