I don't thing that's even what they're doing. I think they're just shamelessly excluding housing, food and energy...
Or maybe they're doing some horrifyingly duplicitous thing like imagining that because everyone has a cell phone, that's equivalent to everyone owning a multi-million dollar mainframe in 1950.

@cjd@pkteerium.xyz @thefinn@poa.st I believe there's the idea on the government side that lying about the state of things, the economy included, is "better" for the citizens as to not make you upset or start questioning things. There is, after all, nothing worse for a leader than a population that thinks for themselves.
