Had an interesting conversation this weekend about surveillance, and I'm still kind of chewing over it. The person arguing for ALPRs coupled with speed cameras to send people automated tickets was saying, it worked! People slow down through there now. Except the drivers he was complaining about, who also run red lights. Except for the argument about whether you actually have to pay that fine or not, which is apparently complex and ongoing. Except for the part where ALPRs send wrong data a lot of the time- I don't think he had much of a leg to stand on. #surveillance #privacy

But the thing that got to me was his argument that "you have to treat people like small children or animals, and create conditioning, or nothing changes." I don't think my response could have been comprehensive enough to show my abhorrence of that entire idea, so I'm going to put it here instead. What I said was "I am neither a small child nor an animal, and I do not want to be treated that way." Which ended with a goalpost move; of course it's not about ME, never mind that it affects me too, when I use the same roads. It's about those terrible drivers- Thing is, I don't think they should be treated that way either. Nor children! I don't use aversive conditioning with my animals, either, so probably I am some kind of a bleeding-heart who can just be dismissed out of hand. What I thought was "have you tried actually relating to another person in your life," but here I am being polite about it. Hopefully he's not your average surveillance advocate, or we got a rough ride ahead of us.

@hexamander@infosec.exchange they love to throw people in jail over these things when you don't pay up - then they can impound all your property etc, it is a rev shakedown for some of these towns but they are also somewhat justified, you have to know where and when you can speed #creeper hone #scofflaw
