@kalviter@hol.ogra.ph its been interesting seeing so many voices, including many i do really respect, shut down wilson's review as either too mean/rude (as in the article you linked, and like, does the same criticism in a different tone change it that much?) or a bad faith refusal to accept different interpretations (when the way i interpreted the review and the film was moreso a failure in execution than the aims of the interpretation themselves) i cant wrap around why people are so weird about this movie (and like i havent even mentioned the racist/transphobic haters of it, which are by far the worst)

    @twd@hol.ogra.ph ancient Greece can get people strange super quickly, in my experience - I wonder if it's because of the whole "birthplace of democracy, cradle of western civilisation" framing we get taught in school? I think that protection extends to so many Greek things as a result, maybe humanising or de-reifying bits of ancient Greek culture get quickly interpreted as "you're tearing down all of western civilisation"
