Apparently turning it off and then on again also works for Ethernet switches.
That was an annoying hour of time spent with the ethernet cable tester that I'd like to have back, please.

Update: it turns out network switches have a lifespan. After many link-down/link-up cycles, I have replaced the switch and have a reliable network again. The old switch was just over 18 years old. RIP you glorious piece of hardware, I shall send you to valhalla (electronics recycler, with a clear label saying that the switch does not work reliably).

@reverseics@infosec.exchange it will even out. at some point, you'll reboot and powercycle everything, only discover it's a bad cable. ;)
