Yesterday I saw a flatbed eighteen-wheeler truck turn left on a red light after the one in front of it turned left on yellow. This is apparently normal enough behaviour that the local-ish paper called it out. I don't think looking away from the wheel is the problem. Especially since it's pretty clear that *distraction* (meaning trying to hold down a conversation or read/compose a text or basically not pay attention to driving) is a problem regardless of where the driver is looking. But I really think the core problem is local and international cultural norms that say ignoring safety regulations is okay, that say "texting while driving is fine, actually" just like they say "red means another car goes through is fine, actually".

@alexpalacefan@mastodonapp.uk @janeishly@beige.party If a lot of people actually think "driving safely is optional" this feature won't do jack shit to help, that's one of the problems. Human beings' disregard for or ignorance of rules – whether it's pedestrians, cyclists, scooter drivers or drivers of vehicles with four or more wheels – will not be solved by a shortsighted new technical feature in some of the vehicles. A lot of people can't drive (or cycle, for that matter) safely while under supervision either, in my experience. This problem needs a different solution. We need to stop blaming phones, touchscreens and the like. Even before those were popular I regularly saw (and still do) people doing their makeup while driving. But banning mascara isn't the solution either, and it frustrates me to no end that I even have to type that sentence.
