@alexpalacefan@mastodonapp.uk @janeishly@beige.party If a lot of people actually think "driving safely is optional" this feature won't do jack shit to help, that's one of the problems. Human beings' disregard for or ignorance of rules – whether it's pedestrians, cyclists, scooter drivers or drivers of vehicles with four or more wheels – will not be solved by a shortsighted new technical feature in some of the vehicles. A lot of people can't drive (or cycle, for that matter) safely while under supervision either, in my experience. This problem needs a different solution.
We need to stop blaming phones, touchscreens and the like. Even before those were popular I regularly saw (and still do) people doing their makeup while driving. But banning mascara isn't the solution either, and it frustrates me to no end that I even have to type that sentence.
