@gsuberland@chaos.social personally i would be inclined to make it a 2D mesh network with active repeaters made out of ice40's or something, where the routing path directly encodes the addressing of the pixels.
so like, bottom left corner is the feed point and that is (0,0) by definition, one hop east is (1,0), etc

@gsuberland@chaos.social this way you don't need any address configuration or discovery or anything. the addressing is an emergent property of the physical topology. (3, 2) just means move 3 hops east and 2 north. Obviously it won't be simple cartesian coordinates so you'd need to invent a slightly more complex scheme for the hex grid but this seems an easily solvable problem
