Some folks write 5pm to 3am. Other folks write 17:00 to 03:00. Japan, on the other hand… (I believe this is called the 30時間制 (sanjyūjikansei) and is used to avoid timing ambiguity. May have something to do with the hours of darkness being connected to the previous day, too.)
