The thing I have the hardest time with, is the notion that instead of the universe being beautiful, or having a purpose, or some greater meaning... Is that there isn't any meaning. That we just made all that meaning up to avoid facing death. That every conciousness is infinitely precious and beautiful, and all 50 billion humans estimated to have existed over the past two million years were just...snuffed out. Along with every octopus, dolphin, whale. Every transgender Roman, every child in a concentration camp, every artist in ancient Egypt. Every elephant. Every flower. That the entire universe is just a charnel house where beautiful things are created so they can be horribly destroyed. And that is how it is. That's all it is. A way to let things think and feel and experience a brief glittering moment, before snuffing out the light forever. I had a theory once, that the universe wasn't fine tuned for life. That it was fine tuned for black holes, and inside universes which produced black holes, you'd find other universes, creating a sort of natural selection for stellar processes. This has been (probably!) disproven before I thought it up, fortunately. But it was the worst universe I could imagine. Our real one isn't much better. It selects for life so it can snuff it out. And everything you've ever seen, everyone you've ever seen, will be forgotten in time. Their consciousness snuffed out in the darkness. Tears in the rain.
