Okay this is entirely due to the backing storage being slow and not the tee-supplicant roundtrips/overhead. If I put the backing store on a tmpfs it's exactly as fast as without persistence. So maybe just actually switching to (HS200) eMMC storage instead of the crappy SD card will be enough.
