πŸŽ‰ The Carpentries has reached a significant milestone today: we have hosted our 5,000th registered workshop! 🎊 The Carpentries was founded in 1998, but we began systematically tracking the activities of our programmes in late 2011. The first thus recorded workshop was hosted at the University of Toronto on 7 to 8 November 2011 as a collaboration between Software Carpentry, Scinet and The Hacker Within. πŸ‘ The workshop was a 2-day boot camp on software engineering for graduate students in the sciences, delivered by Software Carpentry co-founder @gvwilson, alongside Jonathan Dursi, Tommy Guy, Katy Huff, and Dominique Vuvan as co-instructors. The workshop (swcarpentry.github.io/2011-11-07-toronto) promised to cover β€œseveral topics including data storage, the shell, and a lot of Python”, using our interactive teaching method that is still the standard in all Carpentries workshops today. Subsequent to that workshop, The Carpentries has delivered 4,999 additional workshops from across the curricula of its three lesson programs: Data Carpentries, Library Carpentries, and Software Carpentries. This monumental achievement is a testament to the strengths and the efforts of our global community. πŸ™Œ None of this would have been possible without the inspired service of our global community of now over 5,470 volunteer Instructors, and we wish to thank them, the workshop helpers and learners, and all the members of the broader Carpentries community for their varied contributions that make our workshops and supporting programmatic activities possible! The Carpentries is what it is today because of you. πŸ’™ We also wish to thank our past Member and current Partner Organisations who have financially supported the mission of The Carpentries through the years, and have often acted as host institutions for many of our workshops. πŸ™ 🌟 We value all the contributions! 🌟 Here is to the next 5000 workshops! πŸ’« πŸ“Œ Please share your memories of past Carpentries workshops that you hosted, taught, supported, or attended – we would love to celebrate all these stories! Share photos, anecdotes, social media posts, videos, blog post write-ups, anything to showcase and celebrate this milestone! πŸ₯³
