UE1 was lighting and textures interacting in a very specific way (UT99 and Deus Ex look almost identical). It was UE2 that introduced heavy bloom (see killing floor as the most notable example). UE3's calling card was SSAO interacting with lighting which is the effect you're seeing. No idea what UE4 and UE5 was, sorta lost track.

  • @7666@comp.lain.la @lina@eientei.org @mint@ryona.agency UE2 also had the "really good" dark lighting which is visible if you played Deus Ex IW, Bioshock, Splinter Cell, and more. UE5 really depends on the developer, but there's a lot of jokes about the "UE5 stutter" and a lot depends on how much developers abuse shit like blueprints (CPU usage abuse). The higher-end UE5 games are either too photorealistic or look like Fortnite.
