It certainly owes a lot to German Expressionism, Marcel Duchamp, and Russian Constructivism. It is far from cozy, but reflects the Dada response to a world that made no sense, that could bring about the mass, mechanized death of the First World War. Dada would reject all that and draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa. And it would redecorate.

Schwitters eventually let the house to tenants when he left Germany. By that time the Merzbau had already metastasized to transform several rooms. If you want to visit the Merzbau, you can't. It was destroyed in an Allied bombing raid, bringing the project to an ourobouric fate that couldn't be more appropriate, created and destroyed by war. Of course, we are also fans of the historical preservation of houses, so the Merzbau presents us with a kind of quandry. 3/?
