@ra6bit@infosec.exchange there are three openings on the thing. one to deposit more wood chips into the tray while its running, another is the vent, and a third is a hole for the external drip tray. the wood chip hole, and the vent can be closed, and the drip pan isn't easily exposed, but a mesh might not be a bad idea.
