@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social no, it's a misconception made popular because the old genitive ending '-es' sounds like 'his'.

@eleanorrees@mas.to okay thanks. i don’t understand what i read about the history of the genitive in english. or, possibly, anything about the genitive at all. for the 17th century constructions i mentioned in my post, the word ‘his’ (or ‘her’) is standing in for the genitive case, which is over time becoming used only for possessives?
