Friedman and other conservative economists explicitly rejected empiricism and convinced politicians to go along with their economics of speculation. Keynesian economics is empirical and has the data to back it up. Unfortunately, most voters don't understand it and billionaires don't like economic stability (boom/bust cycles help them hoard more wealth), so we don't really do that economic science stuff unless there's a major crisis.
