I think one of the strengths of the Harry Potter books, considering how long they get as you go on, is that the author doesn't provide meaningless information about the characters. Every backstory, every incident for the most part, all have a place, even if you don't know it until the next book. There's nothing worse then reading 100 pages of back story that ends up not mattering where the plot goes at all.
