#punkovoltaics I'm currently considering would it really be so easy to make a NaFePO4 battery at home? 1.Get some thin sheet iron 2. Paint it with salty water, let it rust evenly, wash the salt off 3. Take some aluminum foil, cover with graphite 4. Separate with two sheets with baking paper, roll in a tube 5. Seal in a container 6. Add an electrolyte made with sodium acetate 7. ... 8. Profit! You have made a working rechargeable battery. Am I wrong with it? Can the electrolyte be water based or do I need some fancy organic solvent?

  • @licho@kolektiva.social From a chemical point of view, electrolytes can be water-based. Take a common car battery (lead plates + sulphuric acid) as an example: the acid is a 38% solution of H2SO4 in water, as pure sulphuric acid can't exist in normal circumstances (normal means atmospheric pressure and temperature of 25 degrees). Maybe I remember the chemistry lessons wrong and it can theoretically exist but is highly unstable. But one way of another, the car battery electrolyte is an acid solution in water, not pure acid anyway.
