@licho@kolektiva.social From a chemical point of view, electrolytes can be water-based. Take a common car battery (lead plates + sulphuric acid) as an example: the acid is a 38% solution of H2SO4 in water, as pure sulphuric acid can't exist in normal circumstances (normal means atmospheric pressure and temperature of 25 degrees). Maybe I remember the chemistry lessons wrong and it can theoretically exist but is highly unstable. But one way of another, the car battery electrolyte is an acid solution in water, not pure acid anyway.
