People who copy and paste others' posts without attribution don't get to take the high ground about generative AI companies stealing content.

Someone once asked me a really good question: "You get on your soapbox about joke-copying all the time, but how is that different from memes and GIFs?" I think the main difference is that a screenshot or a GIF—even if it doesn't show enough context to tell where it came from or who said it first—is a de facto acknowledgement that you, the poster, found it rather than came up with it. Whereas posting text without attribution is a tacit statement that "I said this."
