Someone once asked me a really good question: "You get on your soapbox about joke-copying all the time, but how is that different from memes and GIFs?"
I think the main difference is that a screenshot or a GIF—even if it doesn't show enough context to tell where it came from or who said it first—is a de facto acknowledgement that you, the poster, found it rather than came up with it. Whereas posting text without attribution is a tacit statement that "I said this."

Plagiarism isn't only problematic because it's "stealing" someone else's work; there's also a fundamental issue with misrepresenting the origin of that work. It's not just that you took it from someone else; the problem is also, and in some cases primarily, that you passed it off as your own.
