@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @davidnjoku@mastodon.world this notably isn’t that. It’s spending £0 to have a go at a game where you have 50% chance of winning £1m. Or, alternately you can have £50k. You’re not *spending* £50k; you never had it in the first place and it’s not part of the wager. The two options are standalone, no cross reliance or influence.

  • @SquirrelwithaninvisibleW@mastodon.social @davidnjoku@mastodon.world But, rationally, spending money for a 50% chance of winning 20x more is an obvious choice. And, indeed, a game that you would want to keep playing as many times as you could. There are a bunch of interesting psychological experiments in this space. People are far more likely to avoid something that they perceive as loss.

  • @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @davidnjoku@mastodon.world though I can see your angle, but it comes down to if/when in the process you’re feeling your win/loss. You choose £50k - you could see it as ‘losing’ a fair chance at £1m You flip and get £0 - you could see it as ‘losing’ £50k or ‘losing’ the fair chance at £1m You flip and get £1m - there’s no feeling of loss
