Terry Pratchett's Going Postal is one of my favorite books to re-read. If you haven't read it, the rest of this may not make much sense. The thought popped into my head earlier today about Mr. Pump estimating the amounts of deaths that have been a result of Moist vin Lipwig's schemes and scams, and Moist immediately denies this both vocally and internally. We even get a bit of his inner narrative about it; he didn't directly harm anyone, it's their fault for being scammed. (Cont.)

Moist is able fo self-reflect to some degree; he's already being forced to atone for other actions, so he does seem aware that he has caused harm even as he tries to recontextualize it as part of a game. He doesn't do it for the money, he does it for a certain kind of thrill. I think about the reflection of that in our world a lot. There are plenty of people in places of power who have smooth talked their way into roles of importance with little to no regard for who they harm. (Cont.)
